Mullingar and Bloomfield praised as WIDA brings Irish dancing home

E X C ITE M E N T prevailed at Bloom field House Hotel, Mu llingar, last Saturday, September 10, as more than 100 Irish dancers from across the country converged on the local hotel to take part in the first World Irish Dance Association (WIDA ) National Grade Examinations ever held in Ireland.
This is a huge coup for local Irish dancing schools and particularly, for local hotel, Bloomfield House, who the judges described as ‘extremely accommodating’ and as a result, have also decided to hold the upcoming WIDA Teacher and Examiner Workshop in the local hotel. The convention will attract the creme de la creme from Irish dance circles in Ireland, the UK and from across the continent and Bloomfield House Hotel will be the venue for this prestigious weekend, which will take place on January 15 and 16.
Speaking to Topic this week, local dance teacher, Kevin Lyster, was thrilled with the success of the
weekend and the fact that Mullingar had been selected to host the upcoming workshop. “The upcoming convention did not have to be held in Mullingar. It could have been held in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Kerry - basically anywhere. But the judges and WIDA were so impressed with Mullingar and the Bloomfield House
Hotel that they made no hesitation in booking the convention in for January, so it’s really fantastic,” he enthused. “The fact that the National Grade Examinations are going to remain in Ireland every year now is also a testament to the good work that went on in Mullingar last weekend. Hopefully, they will come back to Mullingar again next year, as it is extremely central when you take into consideration that dancers are coming from north, south, east and west to take part,” he continued.

First impressions
The receptionist has the smile and the eye contact. I pull my wheelie case through the lobby. She welcomes me, talks me through the route to my room, and offers to call a porter to help with my luggage -- never a given in a four-star hotel. It's a nice check-in.
The hotel itself is a slower-burn. Entrance gates deliver guests to the side of a campus with previous lives as a manor house, military hospital and convent, meaning the first impression is made by its car park, delivery gates and smokers' corners. The best is kept till last -- a long, parkland-framed façade with stunning views over Lough Ennell.
The room
A rambling series of corridors leads me to Room 433, a standard double overlooking the lake. The overall feeling I get is one of functional four-star comfort. Prints of lakeside scenes complement the waterside setting, and a spotless tiled bathroom comes with a marble sink, own-brand squeezy bath products and a powerful shower. Free Wi-Fi is available in public areas and room service can be called 24/7. I enjoy a sound sleep.
The pamper factor
The Bloomfield Spa & Laser Clinic opens from 10am to 6pm, offering a full and fancy range of facials, massage and hand and foot treatments. The signature experience combines a gold wrap, heated seashell massage and facial therapy for €120. It takes 105 minutes.
My check-in experience is echoed by a friendly breakfast waitress and leisure centre attendant, too.
Service is earthy and modest rather than polished or poised. When I ask directions to nearby Belvedere House, another staff-member fishes me out a free pass -- a nice touch.
The food
Casual fare is served at the bar, and a three-course dinner costs €25pp with tea or coffee in the Charles Brinsley restaurant. Both have lovely lake views; if you can, nab window seats.
I started dinner with a carpaccio of tasty beechwood-smoked salmon, followed by a generous serving of roast beef as a main. Breakfast was dished up in an enclosed veranda off the restaurant, and I was able to stock up on fresh fruit salad and yogurt before tucking into a big fry. I loved the poached eggs, popping with yolky goo with the prod of a fork.
One other food idea I liked was the summer picnic basket, which includes wine, sambos, strawberries, cheese, fruit and Pringles for €50. You could bring it down the moseying path towards the swan-spotted lakeshore -- one of the estate highlights.
What to do
The highlights of Bloomfield's leisure centre are an impressive gym and 20m pool. I like long hotel pools, because they cater for swimmers as well as splashers, and there are free aqua aerobics, circuit training and 'hips, bums and tums' classes too. Families are also part of the picture. A kids' club runs throughout the summer and a small playground sits in the shade of a big horse-chestnut tree outside. Nearby, I took the opportunity to visit the brilliant Belvedere House and Gardens, but there's lots to do in this undersold part of the country besides -- not least an outing to Mullingar and a fishing trip to the local lakes.
The downsides
Don't come expecting the glitz and the glamour of a five-star, but Bloomfield House is a reliable all-rounder with solid facilities and hardworking staff. You're as likely to bump into canoodling couples here as a communion, conference, or concert by the likes of Crystal Swing, and that's no bad thing. It's super-affordable, too.

When I returned, the room was empty and Beautifully Quiet with the music in the Background. I revelled in this as its rare to me anymore. While waiting for my friends return, I had No Problem Relaxing and letting the feeling of the Massage and the Oil Seep into me.

"The first day I went to look at the Bloomfield House Hotel I was really taken in by the views of the lake and grounds, as I met with Martina another bride came up to me and said she had her reception there the day before and highly recommended the hotel, which was great to hear from another bride!!! So shortly after i booked my reception with them and through out all my planning Maria or one of her team were there to answer and solve any problems i had, they were a pleasure to deal with.
On the day of the wedding everything ran so smoothly, we arrived to champagne and a warm welcome from Martina. The Lake and grounds made an amazing backdrop for my pictures. The kids were fed and sent to kids club which they loved. Martina looked after us and made sure everything ran in order. The bridal suite was lovely and I could have slept in the petal covered bed for a week it was so comfortable!!
The day after the wedding I had a facial and I have to say it was one of the most relaxing facials I have had and as a beauty therapist myself I would be quite fussy about treatments!!! I was just raging i didnt get to spend more time in the spa!!!
The next evening the hotel staff arranged for us all to eat together (47 of us) and looked after us really well. All my guests loved the Hotel and everyone complimented the food and service.
